Lee & Laws Named Rotary Students of the Semester

Maiyeng Lee of Taylorsville and Cregg Laws of Newton have been named Rotary Students for the spring 2010 semester by Catawba Valley Community College.

Up to eight students are nominated for this award during each academic year. Students are recognized for their academic achievements, school leadership and community involvement. Recipients receive gift certificates to be used in the school cafeteria and bookstore.

Lee is a first-year student enrolled in college transfer studies. Last semester, she received a State Employees Credit Union Scholarship. A graduate of Alexander Central High School, she was involved in many academic and club activities, including Beta Club, Student Council, Quiz Bowl, Interact Club and year book staff. She volunteered for many activities, including the Head Start Christmas Party, backpacks for kids project and a Christmas food drive for the Christian Crisis Center. Lee also received the CVCC Abernathy 6th Grade Scholarship. She is the daughter of Chai Lee and Yer Her of Taylorsville.

Laws is enrolled in the early childhood education associate degree at CVCC. He is also enrolled at Lenoir-Rhyne University in the elementary education bachelor’s degree program.

He graduated from Freedom High School where he received many honors. He worked as a professional artist for a small Hickory company for more than 20 years before becoming unemployed. Many of his paintings appear at area businesses, across the country and some overseas. He volunteers at his church, Thornton Elementary School and the Catawba Science Center. He and his wife, Denise, have been foster-to-adopt parents with Catawba County Social Services since 1999 and have kept 10 different children in their home. They have adopted two sons.
