High School Students Examine Health Careers @ CVCC's Camp Med

Fourteen students from Newton Conover School of Health Sciences, Hickory High School and Challenger High School recently spent part of their summer vacation at Camp Med, a special health sciences career exploration camp hosted by Catawba Valley Community College.

Select 9th, 10th and 11th graders at the two high schools with a minimum 2.5 GPA are chosen to participate.

Developed by CVCC in collaboration with Frye Regional Medical Center and funded by a grant from Northwest Area Health Education Center, Camp Med helps recruit, educate and prepare high school students for health-care careers. All participants receive a stethoscope and a lab coat.

This year’s participants spent two days learning about different allied health care careers they can pursue at CVCC, including nursing, dental hygiene, electroneurodiagnostic technology, emergency medical science, health information technology, polysomnography, radiography, respiratory therapy and surgical technology as well as other allied health opportunities throughout the state.

The group heard speakers from CVCC, the N.C. Health Careers Access Program at Chapel Hill, Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of Catawba Valley, Catawba County Public Health, Lenoir-Rhyne University and Gaston College.

Students also spent two days shadowing health professionals at Frye Regional Medical Center and an entire day touring Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem.
