Kontras Quartet Performs on Campus Nov. 16

The Kontras Quartet will performance on the Catawba Valley Community College campus Tues., Nov. 16, at 7 p.m. in the Auditorium.

The concert is open to students, faculty, staff and the public. There is no charge for admission.

Currently in its first year as the Hickory Metro Resident Quartet with the Western Piedmont Symphony, the Kontras Quartet is rapidly becoming one of the most vibrant young string quartets on the scene. They were founded in Chicago where all four members performed with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. The quartet has an international flavor.  Violinist Dmitri Pogorelov is from Russia, violinist Francois Henkins is from South Africa, Violist Ai Ishida is from Japan, and cellist Jean Hatmaker is from Illinois.  They have performed in numerous orchestral groups in the United States and abroad, including solo performances.

The concert is part of an ongoing effort to give CVCC students more access to the arts through a partnership with the United Arts Council of Catawba County. Students receive free admission to all Western Piedmont Symphony concerts with college identification plus access to plays, concerts and exhibits offered by the other Arts Council affiliates, free YMCA of Catawba Valley memberships, discounts Carowinds tickets and many other perks that are part of a special student benefits package called Community Connections.

For more information about the Nov. 16 concert, contact Mike Kirby at CVCC, 828-327-7000, ext. 4305.
