Catawba Valley Community College Names Students of the Semester

Judy Hellstrom of Newton and Adel Wilks of Hickory have been named Students of the Semester for spring 2011 by Catawba Valley Community College.

Up to eight students are nominated for this award during each academic year. Students are recognized for their academic achievements, school leadership and community involvement. They also receive gift certificates to be used in the school cafeteria and bookstore.

A native of Gainesville, Fla., Hellstrom is enrolled in the Respiratory Therapy associate degree program. She serves as a mentee for the North Carolina Society of Respiratory Care and is a member of the Respiratory Therapy Club and the American Association of Respiratory Care. She and her three children live in Newton.  

Wilks will complete an associate degree in business administration next fall and plans to complete her bachelor’s degree through Appalachian State’s Hickory Center. She served as a 2010 graduation marshal, was selected for the 2010-11 CVCC Student Leadership Academy and named to the Honors List in spring 2010. She was a work-study student and volunteered in CVCC’s Cooperative Education Department, and she served as a peer mentor. A former resident of the Family Care Center, Wilks volunteers at the center’s Thrift Store. A native of Akron, Ohio, Wilks has lived in Hickory for the past three years. She and her three children attend Unity Evangelical Lutheran Church where she is involved in the social ministry and the nursery. She works as an administrative assistant in CVCC’s Personnel Dept.
