CVCC President Elected to NJCAA Board

The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) recently elected Catawba Valley Community College President Dr. Garrett D. Hinshaw to serve as a presidential representative on the board of directors. He was elected during the organization’s annual meeting in Colorado Springs, which he was unable to attend.

Dr. Hinshaw was one of only three college presidents elected to serve on the NJCAA board and will represent the East Central District.

The NJCAA is the governing body of two-year college athletics, offering athletic and academic opportunities to college students. It is the second largest national intercollegiate athletic organization behind the NCAA in the United States with over 500 member schools in 43 states.

More than 100 students compete in NJCAA athletics at CVCC in baseball, basketball, and volleyball.

As a former All-Southern Conference and All Atlantic Region baseball player at Appalachian State University, Dr. Hinshaw will provide a background of collegiate athletic experiences, discipline and commitment to his new role with the NJCAA.

Dr. Hinshaw became CVCC’s third president in 2006. He is immediate past chair of the Catawba County Chamber of Commerce, and serves on numerous area boards, including the Catawba County Economic Development Association, ASU Reich College of Education Advisory Board, Catawba County United Way, and YMCA of Catawba Valley.

He is currently serving at the state level as chair of the N.C. Community College System Curriculum Program Application Review Committee, Chair of the Presidential Legislative Committee and Co-chair of the N.C. Community College System Performance Measures Initiative.
