Foss Presented Excellence in Teaching Award

Catawba Valley Community College’s Cyber Crime Technologies faculty Tom Foss was recently presented the college’s 2012 Excellence in Teaching Award.

Criteria for the prestigious award include effective and innovative teaching techniques, leadership and skill in motivating high quality student performance, effective communication with students and colleagues, support of the total college mission and service beyond the classroom. Candidates are nominated by their peers.

Foss teaches in the criminal justice curriculum specializing in Cyber Crime Technologies. He came to CVCC with 30 years of management, training and consulting experience in information technology. He has worked to refine the content of all cyber crime courses, migrating them to online delivery and establishing a learning lab to improve the educational experience.

Outside the classroom, Foss is chapter vice president for the western North Carolina sector of the FBI-sponsored Infragard. He established a relationship with a consortium of colleges with cyber crime programs called CyberWatch, which is funded by the Department of Defense and the National Science Foundation.

Last year, he worked with national faculty, the staff of the Center for Internet Security and community partners to develop a CyberChallenge Camp. Seventeen students participated, and CVCC student Deb Lawter received a $1,000 scholarship as a result of her   participation.

Foss is director of CVCC’s Center for Information Assurance, an outreach effort that assists business in the college’s service area with the development of information security awareness and policies.

He has also developed service area agreements with Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute, AB Tech Community College, and is pursuing articulation agreements with the University of Maryland University College, Champlain College (Vermont) and Wilmington University (Delaware).

He and his wife, Karen, live in Conover.
