Smith Receives Alexander Superintendent's Scholarship

Dr. Garrett Hinshaw, Catawba Valley Community College president, and Dr. Jeff Peale, Interim Superintendent of Alexander County Schools, recently awarded Adonna Smith the 2012 Catawba Valley Community College Superintendent’s Scholarship for Alexander County.

Awarded to an Alexander Central High School student who plans to pursue a career in education, the Superintendent’s Scholarship is a full, two-year scholarship to CVCC.

Adding to six credit hours of college credit she earned while attending dual enrollment courses at CVCC while in high school, Smith will study general education courses. She plans to transfer to a four-year university to major in education and aspires to become a high school English or science teacher.

A 2012 graduate of Alexander Central High School, Smith was active in several school activities, including Future Teachers of America and Art Club where she served as vice president, and Teacher Cadets where she volunteered at Stony Point Elementary. Smith was also active in the community volunteering with the Alexander County Library for two years and with Camp Fear Haunted Trail sponsored by Hiddenite Family Campground.

She received two honorable mentions for her poetry submission to the ACHS literary magazine Alexander Muse in 2011 and her photography submission in 2012.

Smith is the daughter of Jenoa and David Colborne of Stony Point.
