Author Shirley Wachtel Reads on Campus March 12 & 13

Catawba Valley Community College will host book readings on campus by visiting author Shirley R. Wachtel, author of “My Mother’s Shoes,” on March 12 and 13.

The March 12 reading will be held at 7 p.m. in the Student Center on the Main Campus in Hickory.

The March 13 reading will be held at 10 a.m. in the Tarlton Complex, also on the Main Campus.

There is no charge for either reading; the community is invited to attend. The author will sign books after both readings.

Published in 2011, “My Mother’s Shoes” recounts the poignant story of the author’s mother, a Holocaust survivor, and the challenges she had to face in her homeland and later as a wife and mother living in the United States.  Nearly 600 students in CVCC’s Developmental Reading and English courses are reading the novel.

Wachtel also authored the young adult novel “The Story of Blima: A Holocaust Survivor,” a volume of poetry, a number of interactive mystery books for children, essays that have appeared in The New York Times and poems published in Middlesex: A Literary Journal. Her literary works have received numerous awards from Writers Digest, The New Jersey Library Association, The Newark Public Library and Townsend Press.

Wachtel earned a doctorate in letters from Drew University and a master’s degree from Long Island University. For the past 26 years, she has served as an English professor at Middlesex County College, in Edison, N.J.  In 2006, she was awarded The Innovative Teaching Award by The League for Innovation in Community Colleges in conjunction with The New York Times.
