Office Systems

An Associate degree in Office Administration and Technology is designed to prepare students for administrative, supportive, and supervisory positions in business or industrial settings, professional offices, public institutions, and government agencies.

Office AministrationThe Office Administration curriculum prepares individuals for positions in administrative support careers. It equips office professionals to respond to the demands of a dynamic computerized workplace.

Students will complete courses designed to develop proficiency in the use of integrated software, oral and written communications, analysis and coordination of office duties and systems, and other support topics. Emphasis is placed on non-technical and technical skills. Students learn about office management, workplace ethics and diversity, records management, computer applications, keyboarding, web design, and basic accounting.

The length of times it takes to complete this program depends on whether the student is full-time or part-time.  It is possible for the full-time day student to complete five semesters in two years.  Courses in the office administration program are offered during the day and online.

With appropriate work experience, graduates may apply for certification as a Certified Professional Secretary® (CPS®) or a Certified Administrative Professional®(CAP®) through the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP).

After completing computer applications courses, students are eligible to apply for certification in the areas of word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation graphics.

Career Overview

Graduates of the office administration program at Catawba Valley Community College receive an Associate in Applied Science degree. This degree qualifies students to be employed as administrative assistants, data entry clerks, receptionists, and office managers. These types of positions are in many organizations including governmental agencies, school systems, retail establishments, insurance companies, small businesses, and industry. Job classifications range from entry-level to supervisor to middle management.
