Do you want to live a healthy life but lack the tools to be nutrition savvy? Catawba Valley Community College and Catawba Valley Medical Center are teaming up to equip you with the knowledge and skills to be successful at planning and eating healthy. You will have the opportunity to attend five different dynamic classes lead by Renee Greene, a registered and licensed wellness dietitian. Learn how to shop and cook on a budget, make healthy choices when snacking and dining out, and how to achieve a healthy weight while preventing disease. You will receive helpful handouts, learn how to prepare healthy meals and snacks, as well as sample nutritious foods. Finally, get a grocery store tour where you will put your knowledge into practice! Sign up for one class or all five, whatever fits into your lifestyle!

Eating Healthy and Shopping on a Budget

With rising prices and falling budgets, it's challenging to bring home ingredients for balanced meals. But eating right doesn't have to break the budget! Participants will learn the three steps for healthy eating while saving money--planning, purchasing, and preparing. Then, a healthy, budget-friendly meal will be demonstrated and tasted!

Healthy Choices When Snacking and Dining Out

Eating out and mindless snacking can sabotage a healthy diet. Develop an understanding of why to snack, when to snack, what to choose, and how much to eat. Then, learn to prepare a healthy snack food. Also, identify the components of eating healthy when dining out including: deciding to eat healthy, ordering healthy, and eating healthy. Practice making healthy selections with menus from area restaurants.

Eating Right to Prevent Disease

Every day, we are bombarded with health claims from the media and from food packaging. Students will learn the importance of nutrition in promoting health and preventing disease, as well as distinguish between the truths and myths of media claims and popular diets. A nutritious recipe packed with antioxidants will be prepared and sampled!

Grocery Store Tour

Put all your skills into practice! A personal-guided tour at your local grocery store will equip you to make healthy choices when meal planning and shopping. Learn to read food labels and identify and select healthy food items to purchase. Take home handouts packed with tips and tools to become nutrition savvy at the market!
