Knitting Fun (Ages 8-11)

Did you ever want to learn to knit, but thought it was too hard? This class will show you that knitting can be done with nothing but your own fingers or 2 sharpened pencils! Students will learn how to cast on, do a basic knit stitch, and cast off. While learning to read a simple pattern and to work with basic shapes in creating designs, students can begin the following projects: choker necklace/bracelet, bookmark, and cell phone/IPod carrier or mini bag. Students will also be introduced to the many possibilities for knitting as a craft, websites to continue and extend learning, and other knitting resources. Click here for a supply list.

Out of the Box: Cool Things to do with Cardboard (Ages 8 - 11)

GREEN is FUN when you think outside the box! Come learn some creative and inventive ways of using a plain old box. Using basic square and rectangle shapes, students will create a variety of cardboard projects for extended play, imagination, and creativity--while reducing the amount of garbage that goes into the landfill. You'll never look at "trash" the same way again! The class will conclude with a student presentation and gallery walk where students will be able to look more closely at each other's projects, ask questions, and of course...play with what they have created. Students are asked to bring boxes from home.

Hola! In this dynamic class, students will gain a basic understanding of the Spanish language, cultural manners, common vocabulary, general language rules, commonly used expressions and phrases for basic conversation. You will have fun learning basic step dances, learning about costumes, listening and singing songs, and tasting four dishes and learning some expressions from Mexico, Spain, Peru, and Costa Rica.

SAT Preparation (Rising 10th - 12th Graders)

Students will explore test-taking strategies to be used in taking the SAT. The class will cover skills related to all portions of the SAT: Reading, Writing, and Math. Practice sets, answers, and feedback will be provided. Students will need to purchase "Kaplan SAT 2013: Strategies, Practice and Review". The books are approximately $15.00 and the ISBN# is: 9781609787066. Students also need to have a graphing calculator, pencil, highlighter and a notebook.

Teens Behind the Wheel (Ages 14-17)

One out of every four 16-year old drivers in North Carolina is involved in an accident during the first year of driving. This class is designed to provide defensive driving training for new drivers to help improve their knowledge of safe driving principles and their driving skills. Three hours of classroom instruction (Thursday) and five hours of behind the wheel instruction (Saturday) are provided in this class. For the driving skills portion, students must bring a car and one parent is encouraged to attend.
