Tips for Writing a Resume

  • KISS-keep it short and simple.
  • Make sure your name, address, and phone number are correct for your heading.
  •  The objective (optional) is to match the job description.
  • Bold your headings and strengths, your Job Title, not the company.
  • Some headings, one might have, include: Objective, Education/Training, Employment, Skills &   Qualifications, Volunteer and Military Experience.
  • Use compelling buzzwords for you to stand out from the others.
  • Use size 12 font, either Arial or Times New Romans.
  • List the most important information about your work history, education and skills.
  • Organize your information; put your strengths first. Market your skills and experience.
  • Remember to list most recent job and education going back in time.
  • Best to keep resume to one page, but no more than two.
  • Make sure the past employment dates are correct, only need month and year.
  • Leave out the year of graduation, if you are worried about it dating you.
  • If you have extra training make sure you include that in the resume.
  • Put your information in preferred order (ie: If your Education is stronger than your Work Experience, list it first... putting ‘your  best foot forward’).
  • Make your resume aesthetically pleasing, balanced on the page. Are there big white spaces in your resume? Refer to Resume examples below.

  CHRONOLOGICAL RESUME

Most common and best accepted format. Your most recent work experiences appear first, showing you qualifications for the job.

FUNCTIONAL RESUME

Focuses on transferable skills--what you can do rather than when or where you learned to do it. It groups similar accomplishments under skill headings and ignores chronological order. It is a good format for career changers and those with limited work history. Check out this website for an example template for a functional resume:  http://jobstar.org/tools/resume/tempfun.php
