Minutes
CVCC Professional Staff Association
August 2, 2001
East Campus 1009

Members Present: Doug Allen, Sue Asp, Marian Baer, Judy Barkley, John Beall, Harry Cooke, Connie Frye, Sarah Loudermelk, Debbie Saine, Donna Trado , Anne Williams

The meeting was called to order by President Sue Asp.

By consensus of the membership, the minutes of the last general meeting were approved.

The treasurer reported that the treasury still stands at $55.00. No funds have been expended the last quarter. Anne Williams asked where the treasury is kept to which the president responded that the funds are currently kept in a locked cash box locked in the safe of the Continuing Education Business Office.

Dues Announcement for 2001-2002: The PSA approved the continuance of membership dues and authorized the president to notify prospective and continuing members.

Board of Trustees May Meeting Report: It was the decision of the PSA Executive Committee that only members of the Executive Committee and past presidents of the PSA were to attend this meeting to show support for the PSA’s position that the CVCC administration maintain equitable standards for all employees.

Request to move “Annual Pilgrimage”: Based upon a suggestion from Harry Cooke and Anne Williams at the last general meeting, the president asked the membership to consider moving the PSA’s en masse “annual pilgrimage” to the Board of Trustees to the month of October, for it is the time at which the CVCC administration develops budget requests for the Catawba County commissioners and would allow us input into those budget requests. She recommended that in light of the state budget shortfalls that we not instigate this move until October 2002. Anne Williams so moved and Donna Trado seconded the motion. Upon vote , this motion failed to pass. Doug Allen then moved that the PSA seek to be placed on the agenda for each October meeting beginning 2001 to update the Board on the PSA’s activities, to highlight the professional staff’s contributions and to express issues of concern. John Beall seconded the motion. Upon vote, this motion passed.

Nominating Committee for 2001-2002: Sue Asp asked for volunteers to serve on the Nominating Committee to select the slate of PSA officers for 2001-2002. She stated the president-elect Doug Allen would chair this committee. Anne Williams and Donna Trado volunteered to serve. Sue gladly offered her assistance to the committee.

Updates

During the last quarter no efforts had been made toward the organization of a statewide professional staff association.

Donna Trado, chairperson of the Recognition of Outstanding Professional Staff Person of the Year Task Force, reported it had been inactive last quarter.

Goal # 7—Cooperative Projects with other CVCC Associations: Sue Asp met with Susan Harris, President of the Support Staff Association, and Kathy Crump, President of the Faculty Association, to develop cooperative activities. It was a difficult task; however, these representatives determined four common objectives to present to their memberships. These are support for a training initiative for all employees on the new computer system conversion, morale enhancement activities, customer service, and a salary study. John Beal moved that the PSA cooperate with the other associations to explore strategies to meet these objectives. The motion was seconded. The motion passed unanimously.

Other Business:

PSA Brochure Update: The goals of signage and communication under future goals will be moved to accomplishments section of the brochure. It was recommended that Doug Allen e-mail copies of the brochure, along with a welcome, to newly hired professional staff.

Next PSA General Meeting: At the invitation of Norma Marler, chairperson of the CVCC Professional Development Committee, Sue suggested that the next PSA general meeting be held during the Fall Professional Development Day for Faculty and Staff on October 16, 2001, 10:55-11:45 A.M. There was no opposition from the members. The location of the meeting will be announced later.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned by Sue Asp.

Respectfully submitted,

Judy Barkley
Secretary-Treasurer
