Letter to the NC Senators and Representitives

November 1, 2001

Representative _______________

_________, NC 28___

Dear Representative __________,

The Professional Staff Association of Catawba Valley Community College wants to express our thanks to you and the North Carolina General Assembly for provisions in the current budget. After a long and tortuous process, a budget/appropriations bill was passed that begins to address several issues of vital interest to the Community College System and professional staff members. We are especially heartened by the provision to raise Community College faculty and professional staff salaries by an additional 1.25% (Joint Conference Committee Report: 103 Faculty and Professional Staff Salary Enhancements).

Often in the past, specific raises were directed to faculty, and the equally or better qualified professional staff members were overlooked. We have worked hard to raise the awareness of the reality that community colleges employ many hard working and dedicated professionals that are not "faculty". We appreciate the efforts of President Lancaster and others on the NCDCC staff for assisting this effort. We ask for your continued support in this specific recognition of the essential nature of counselors, librarians, media specialist, continuing education professionals, and others to the overall mission of Catawba Valley Community College and the entire North Carolina Community College System.

Recent economic downturns are a stark reminder that community colleges are normally the first choice for education and job training for displaced workers. Our enrollment is at an all-time high, and the demands on professional staff have grown accordingly. As an organization, executive committee, or professional staff, we would be happy to sit down with you and discuss our vision and goals for Catawba Valley Community College. Because times are tough, we feel that increased support for community colleges is essential as workers prepare for new and better jobs.

Sincerely,

Douglas M. Allen
President
