The K-64 Character in Catawba Project is receiving a huge boost thanks in part to a grant received by the Catawba Valley Community College Foundation, Inc. through the Corning Incorporated Foundation.

A $15,000 grant presented by Corning Incorporated Foundation will help Catawba County school districts implement character education curriculum in kindergarten through eighth-grade (K-8) classrooms.

“Catawba Valley Community College and Corning have established a strong partnership to serve the needs of our communities,” said CVCC President Dr. Garrett Hinshaw. “Without the support of partners such as the Corning Foundation, Inc. we would not be able to provide the quality of programming that we currently offer to our students.”

The K-64 Character in Catawba Project focuses on developing the soft skills, like communication, collaboration and conflict resolution, that are vital in the workplace.

K-64 is collaborating with each of the three Catawba County K-12 school districts to equip local K-8 educators with vetted character education curriculum that will build these skills and an evidence-based screening tool to measure each student’s proficiency in each concept.

"Character Education and Soft Skills Development is one of K-64's six guiding priorities, and we recognize, in light of the impact of COVID-19, that it is critical to address the social and emotional needs of students during these challenging and uncertain times,” said Jennifer Jones, K-64 Business Liaison. “We are grateful for the generous support of the Corning Incorporated Foundation and their investment in Catawba County students through this project and to K-64 Advisory Board member Michael Ellwanger, Director Global Cable Product Development Optical Fiber and Cable for Corning, for his service and dedication to K-64.”

The Corning Incorporated Foundation is a charitable contributions organization established by Corning Incorporated in 1952. Through leadership and collaboration, the Foundation strives to foster vibrant, enriching, and supportive Corning communities. The Foundation focuses on education, human services, culture, and volunteerism in Corning business locations.
