Penley Receives 2018 Excellence in Teaching Award

Jeffrey D. Penley, J.D., Senior Professor of Business Law and Ethics for Catawba Valley Community College, was recently presented the college’s 2018 Excellence in Teaching Award for full-time faculty.

Criteria for the prestigious award include effective and innovative teaching techniques, leadership and skill in motivating high quality student performance, effective communication with students and colleagues, support of the total college mission and service beyond the classroom. Candidates are nominated by students, faculty or staff and interviewed by a committee that includes students, faculty, staff and a member of the college’s Board of Trustees.

A native of Burke County, N.C., Penley earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and political science and a law degree at UNC-Chapel Hill. A member of the North Carolina State Bar, he practiced insurance defense law for a large law firm in Charlotte before joining the CVCC faculty in 1994.

In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Penley also serves as a lecturer for CVCC’s Continuing Education Department. He has served numerous leadership roles at the college, including Faculty Senate president and SACS re-accreditation team member. He has developed courses for the N.C. Community College System’s “Virtual Learning Community” and delivered numerous faculty and staff professional development lectures.

He served as faculty fellow for CVCC’s Student in Free Enterprise team from 1996 to 2013, coaching the team to five regional championships. Since 2012, he has served as a public speaking advisor for the SkillsUSA team, with his students winning numerous state championships for extemporaneous speaking and prepared speech.

Penley serves as an adjunct faculty member for Gardner-Webb University and received the GWU Adjunct Faculty of the Year Award in 2002. He and his wife Patricia live in Hickory. His son Benjamin is a pharmacy student at UNC Chapel Hill, and his daughter Katherine, a UNC Chapel Hill graduate, is an English teacher in Hillsborough, N.C.
