In 1998, Catawba Valley Community College began publishing Sanctuary, a literary
arts journal. Since then, six volumes of Sanctuary have showcased student talent in poetry, prose,
photography, and art.
Currently, Sanctuary is helmed by Editors Tim Earley and Tim Peeler. Earley is
also a full-time English Instructor, and Peeler is Director of the Learning Assistance Center. Kevin Rouse
(Humanities Division Chair) and Brad Vogler (Learning Resource Center Reference Librarian) served as
Assistant Editors for the 2004 edition of the journal.
Sanctuary represents the myriad talents and artistic abilities of the CVCC
community. As stated in the 2004 "Note from the Editors," "A diverse group of perspectives
and voices is represented. One page might bear a surrealist, anti-establishment manifesto, while the next is
home to a comforting evocation of pastoral life. All is fair in poetry and art. As the insistently mercurial
Frank O'Hara wrote, 'Grace to be born and live as variously as possible.'"
Submission Guidelines:
Sanctuary is currently accepting submissions of poetry, fiction, essays, and
artwork from CVCC students. Due to limited space, fiction and essay submissions should be relatively short
(no more than 5-6 pages). We take both hard copy and electronic submissions. Electronic submissions should
be e-mailed as an attachment to tearley@cvcc.edu. Hard
copy submissions should be typed and dropped off in Tim Earley's mailbox in WW111 or mailed to Tim Earley,
Humanities Instructor, Catawba Valley Community College, 2550 HWY 70 SE, Hickory, NC 28602.
Deadline for submissions: May 1, 2005.
All submissions will be given careful consideration by the editors. The next volume of Sanctuary
will be published in the summer of 2005.
