HandsOnHistory -Selma Experience
HandsOnHistory at Catawba Valley Community College
Spring 2010 -CVCC students from HIS 221 traveled to Selma, Alabama to study history. March 7 marked the 45th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, a confrontation of civil rights activists and state police in Selma, Alabama. As part of Catawba Valley Community Colleges African American History class, students went to this historic site for a first hand investigation of the event and its significance in American history. After walking across the Edmund Pettus Bridge with over 10,000 others who came, they expressed their feelings. This video presentation seeks to capture and preserve their reflections while demonstrating the value of experiential learning at CVCC. Programs across campus are developing innovative and important methods to make learning meaningful. This class, part of the HandsOnHistory Initiative in cooperation with the CVCC Office of Multicultural Affairs, is just one example of the places an education at Catawba Valley Community College can take you.
