Program Options
The ABE Academy (ABE Academy) is a literacy-based vocational training program for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Instruction is offered in reading, writing, math, oral and written communication, and technology, according to the North Carolina Adult Education Standards. The ABE Academy offers consistent and intensive contextualized classroom instruction which meets these requirements with a focus on career exploration and workforce preparation. Students enrolled in the ABE Academy will share a common goal of transitioning into the workforce or additional educational programs. All students enrolled in the ABE Academy have the right to a positive learning environment where they may achieve their educational goals.

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY: This program is for adults age 17 and older who meet specific enrollment criteria. According to their level of ability, students are placed in groups with qualified instructors. Instruction is provided in an innovative classroom setting and all textbooks and work books are provided. Students also work on computers to improve their problem-solving and job preparation skills.

CVCC’s High School Equivalency (HSE) program prepares students to pass standardized equivalency tests such as the GED and HiSET.
HSE classes are free and available to students 16 or older. A permission form is required for students 16 and 17.
Students enrolled in HSE prepare for the equivalency tests in the classroom and/or online. In-person basic math, algebra, and English classes are available.
Steps for HSE:
Step 1: Contact CCR. Please call our main number 828-327-7000 Ext. 4353 or e-mail us [email protected] to schedule a placement test
Step 2: Allow 2.5 – 3 hours to complete your assessment testing on your scheduled date
Step 3: Orientation. Attend your scheduled orientation. These are offered several times most months
Step 4: Start class. Begin studying on-line or in person. Instructors are in the lab/class to help you
Step 5: Post-testing. Take an in person test after every 40 hours of studying
Step 6: Pass a practice GED/ HiSet test in our lab/class
Step 7: Sign up for an official GED/ HiSet test through your testing account. Official tests are given in our testing center at CVCC

Tuesday and Thursday:

All requests for High School Equivalency transcripts and diplomas must be submitted to DiplomaSender. www.diplomasender.com
Students who earned their diploma are welcomed to participate in CVCC commencement activities in May.

Adult High School (AHS) is a free program, available to students 16 and older, to complete the courses not finished in traditional high school. A permission form is required for students 16 and 17.
Courses are entirely online, so you can work at your own pace from home or in our computer lab.
Steps for AHS:
Step 1: Contact CCR. Please call our main number 828-327-7000 Ext. 4353 or e-mail us [email protected] to schedule a placement test
Step 2: Bring an official sealed copy of your high school transcripts (Must have a minimum of 14 credits to qualify)
Step 2: Allow 2.5 – 3 hours to complete your testing on your scheduled date
Step 3: Meet with the AHS Coordinator for advising
Step 4: Start classes on-line. After the completion of one class, you can take two classes at the same time if more classes are still needed to complete your 22 credit requirement
Step 5: Post-testing is required periodically to stay enrolled in the AHS program

Students in ESL improve their English skills in listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. These classes are free to anyone 16 and older. A permission form is required for students 16 and 17.

Students enrolled in the ABE Academy, HSE, AHS and ESL programs who meet specific criteria will have opportunities to enroll in classes which focus on workplace skills as well as short-term certificates and credentialing programs.
Some of those programs include Manufacturing, Early Childhood Development, Furniture, and Hospitality.
