HICKORY, N.C.—On the afternoon of Friday, May 10th, Catawba Valley Community College honored 810 graduates during its Commencement ceremony.

In alignment with previous years, graduation at CVCC was a walk-through event. The doors of the Tarlton Complex remained open throughout the afternoon. Graduates were joined by family and friends, who watched them walk across the stage, receive their diploma, shake hands with CVCC President Garrett Hinshaw, and step offstage to take photos and receive their CVCC Alumni pins. Graduates of Challenger High School were also recognized during Friday’s ceremony.

The morning and afternoon included formal pinning ceremonies for applicable graduates of Health Education and Public Services programs. Pinnings mark the completion of the graduates’ education and signify their initiation into the professional field. Pinning ceremonies were held at the CVCC Workforce Solutions Complex for the following programs: Associate Degree Nursing (66 graduates); Dental Hygiene (16 graduates); Radiography (13 graduates); Respiratory Therapy (7 graduates); Surgical Technology (5 graduates); and EMS (4 graduates).

Brice Melton, VP of Teaching and Learning, is always excited about events such as graduation, as they provide a welcoming opportunity to celebrate Red Hawk Nation and its students.

“What an amazing celebration of CVCC’s graduates, their hard work, perseverance, and achievements,” says Melton. “It is a privilege to be part of the Commencement ceremony and this special day in our graduates’ lives. I know they will each do great things for their families and communities!”

Dr. Felicia Simmons, VP for College Access and Engagement, described graduation as her favorite event of the year. “The graduation ceremony at CVCC is truly a memorable and heartwarming event,” she says. “The Student Services team, along with additional faculty and staff, create an intimate atmosphere where families can fully participate in celebrating their graduates' achievements, which makes the occasion even more special. The collective support from faculty, staff, friends, and the broader community amplifies the sense of accomplishment and excitement in the air.”

“Moments like these not only mark the end of one chapter for graduates but also signify the beginning of new journeys filled with promise and potential. We are excited for our graduates' future endeavors. Continue to SOAR to new heights. YOU did it. Congratulations!”
