HICKORY, N.C. — Catawba Valley Community College is excited to announce the launch of Red Hawk N.E.X.T., a reimagined summer camp experience designed to inspire curiosity, build skills, and introduce students to future career pathways.

Replacing the former Summerscapes programming, Red Hawk N.E.X.T. reflects CVCC’s commitment to innovation, hands-on learning, and early student engagement. The program offers a wide variety of interactive learning experiences primarily for middle school students, while also including opportunities for elementary and high school participants.

Running over two weeks—June 15–18 and June 22–25—Red Hawk N.E.X.T. features half-day sessions from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., with courses designed to connect creativity, academics, and career exploration in a fun and supportive environment.

Participants can explore a wide range of topics, including:

  • STEM and engineering through hands-on labs and design projects
  • Health sciences with immersive, real-world experiences
  • Skilled trades such as construction, welding, and electrical systems
  • Creative arts including writing, music, and digital design
  • And much more

Each course is designed to build critical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving skills while introducing students to potential career pathways at an early age. Red Hawk N.E.X.T. also emphasizes hands-on, experiential learning—giving students the chance to engage directly with tools, technology, and real-world applications. From learning basic carpentry skills to exploring the human body through lab experiences, students gain exposure to the same high-demand fields offered at CVCC.

“Red Hawk N.E.X.T. is about giving students the opportunity to explore, create, and discover what’s possible for their future,” said Brice Melton, Vice President for Teaching and Learning at CVCC. “By engaging students early through hands-on experiences connected to real careers, we’re helping them build confidence, develop skills, and begin to see themselves in the pathways that lead to meaningful work and continued education.”

Pre-registration is required for all courses, and enrollment is confirmed upon payment. Space is limited, and courses may close once capacity is reached. All classes are $125 each per student.
