Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA)
Certified Nurse Assistant Classes, including CNA1, CNA2, and Refresher, allow those who complete them to register with the NC Board of Nursing.
Upon successful completion of Certified Nurse Assistant courses, students are eligible to apply for the state exam and seek placement on the DHSR CNA I registry or NCBON CNA II registry to work in various healthcare settings.

TECHNOLOGY STANDARDS
All course materials will be accessible through the internet via Blackboard. Students will need access to a computer and dependable internet. All course-related communication is sent using the student’s CVCC e-mail address assigned at the time of registration. It is the student’s responsibility to check and review e-mails and Blackboard daily.
Requirements
Students are required to complete a background check and drug screen and provide proof of vaccines before starting clinical. More information will be provided on the first day of class and can be found in the CNA FAQs.

Nurse Aide I (CNA I)
NURSE AIDE LEVEL 1 (CNA I)
The Nurse Aide Level 1 course prepares students to provide personal care and perform basic CNA skills to work in a variety of health care settings including long-term care, hospitals, and home based services. Emphasis is placed on the aging process and covers topics including basic nursing skills, communication, patient’s rights, safety, CPR, and professional collaboration. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be eligible to apply for the two-part written and skills portions of the state competency exam before being listed on the DHSR CNA I Registry.

Nurse Aide Level 1 courses are available throughout the year including summer and are posted on the Course Schedules in Continuing Education. To locate available courses, please search “Nurse Aide” from your browser search function.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS & COSTS
The Nurse Aide Level 1 course requires 160 hours in the classroom, lab, and clinical. Students are responsible for paying $247.25 at time of registration (Tuition $180.00 plus $67.25 in related program fees). Attendance is an important aspect of learning and students should plan to attend ALL related activities for the duration of the course. Additional program cost are estimated between $700-$1000 and include text books, uniforms, required lab & clinical items, background check & drug screen, vaccines (as applicable), and the Credentia Exam. Nurse Aide II (CNA II)
NURSE AIDE LEVEL 2 (CNA II)
The Nurse Aide Level 2 course provides training in more complex skills for working with patients or residents regardless of setting. Topics covered include the role of the nurse aide II, oxygen therapy, sterile technique, wound care, suctioning, trach care, peripheral IV fluids, urinary cath, nutritional activities, and elimination procedures. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be eligible to register with the North Carolina Board of Nursing (NCBON) for certification.

Refresher Courses
REFRESHER COURSES
Refresher courses are provided for both CNA I and CNA II to reinstate expired certifications (must be within the last 24 months) or obtain NC registry for out-of-state registered CNA I or II applicants.
COURSE SCHEDULE
Refresher courses are scheduled on an “as-needed" basis throughout the year. Please contact the CVCC Registration Office to set up an individual appointment.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS & COST
The refresher courses require students to have a wrist watch with second hand, stethoscope, and bandage scissors. Testing fees are $250.00. Students will be provided a study guide free of charge. Students may loan or purchase ($89.50) the recommended text.

Career Outlook
CAREER OUTLOOK
Healthcare is an ever-expanding industry. Students who obtain their Nurse Aid Certification can continue on to CNA II, Medication Aide, Mental Health Technician, LPN, or RN. Registered Nurses can hold associate degree or bachelorette degrees and move onto a Master’s of Science in Nursing to be Nurse Midwives, Nurse Practioners, Nurse Educators, and Nurse Anesthetist.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics the 2021 Median Pay for Nursing Assistants is $30,290 per year (averaging $14.56 per hour). With a growing elderly population, the need for nursing assistance continues to grow.
