Medical Coding Outpatient: Basic and Advanced
Medical Coding teaches students the medical codes needed to document medical procedures and submit those codes for billing.
The below classes are required to be taken in the following order and are offered each January:
- Medical Administrative Assistant*
- Medical Billing and Coding
*For students who already work in a medical office and understand insurance OR who want to begin the program in July, take Medical Terminology first (see below).
Medical Administrative Assistant
The focus of the Medical Administrative Assistant course is to prepare students for entry-level employment as medical office receptionists, medical billing clerks, medical records clerks and other administrative positions in a variety of settings. Through the program, students gain knowledge of medical terminology, general medical office procedures and acquire the skills necessary to deliver effective customer service and perform important administrative duties. Courses are designed to equip students with the skills needed to perform EMR data entry and develop and maintain patient files and records. Additionally, students become familiar with basic procedural and diagnostic coding systems and processes, medical records management, coding applications, reimbursement, medical ethics and compliance and HIPAA rules and regulations related to the privacy and security of patient information. Upon completion, the student will have the knowledge to sit for industry-recognized certifications. The class will meet online except for the first and last days.
Prerequisite
Student must have and be able to use a computer.
Note: High School diploma will most likely be required for employment in the medical coding field.
Cost
$180 registration fee plus a $6.25 fee for a total of $186.25.
Book: Cengage Unlimited Access (e-book) at $199.99 for a 1-year access. Hard-copy rentals will be available from Cengage for an additional $10 each.
This class will be offered online and will meet in-person the first and last dates. We will offer weekly optional virtual sessions on Monday evenings.

Medical Terminology
This content is included in the Medical Administrative Assistant course, but if you already work in a medical office and understand insurance OR want to begin the program in July, you can take this course first.
This 120-hour study of the professional medical language is directed towards the lay person as well as those already working in a medical setting. It is an introduction to the study of the structure of medical words and terms. Emphasis is placed on spelling and defining commonly used prefixes, suffixes, root words, their combining forms, and body organization. Course content covers the basic human anatomy and physiology for all body systems, laboratory medicine, pharmacology, and names of major diseases, including terms used in physical exams, operative procedures and diagnosis.
The course will be online with optional virtual weekly sessions on Monday evenings.

$180 registration fee plus a $6.25 fee for a total of $186.25.

Class Offering
Medical Billing and Coding (CPT and ICD Coding)
The Medical Billing and Coding program will focus on learning CPT procedures, HCPCS, and ICD-10 diagnoses coding. This will prepare the student to take the NHA CBSC and/or the AAPC Certified Professional Coding (CPC) Certification Exam. The class prepares students for entry-level employment in medical billing and coding, handling patient files and other medical office business procedures in physicians' offices, hospital outpatient centers, and insurance companies, and other various settings. Program courses provide training in medical terminology, medical billing and coding concepts, and healthcare computer information systems. Students are introduced to coding healthcare services, electronic health records systems, and processes for the preparation and submission of healthcare claims. Students are equipped to code diseases, surgeries, and medical procedures for billing and collection utilizing ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS coding systems, to organize, analyze, and technically examine health insurance claims for reimbursement and rejected claims for resubmission. Students will explore HIPAA rules and regulations related to the privacy and security of patient information. Upon completion, the student will have the knowledge to sit for industry-recognized certifications.

Students must have taken Medical Terminology prior to taking Medical Billing and Coding.
